As a result of the annual MOT (Uk safety inspection for all vehicles) the Parking brake efficiency was found to be below required specification and one bumpstop rubber had completely disappeared. I decided on a rear brake overhaul and tidyup. It was possible to pull the rubber part of the existing bumpstop off with very little effort so I guess they had done their fair share. The bumpstop bodies required some persuasion to remove but came off without too much trouble after soaking with penetrating oil. I cleaned everything up and painted the area I had been working on, The new parts were fitted using Hex head bolts as the original Torx bolts were all damaged during removal.
The rear disks had lips on them and were in a pretty shabby state so new disks and pads were sourced. The whole assembly was cleaned and lubricated with copperslip where needed. The parking (Emergency) brake efficiency on the XK8 is marginal at best so care was taken to adjust everything correctly including a stretched handbrake cable. I tidied up the subframe around the mounting area while I was at it, treating it with Vactan rust converter and painting it. There was an advisory for the condition of the gearbox mounting but upon removal it was found to still be sound. I had already sourced a replacement so fitted it anyway and kept the original as a usable spare. This was all done over a weekend on my drive.
